Space filament...

Here under the joint title Space filament... are a constellation of artworks from a selection of shows. They all share concepts rooted in notions of 'deep space' be it either in the deep sea or outer space. The lack of human understanding and knowledge concerning these spheres gives us licence to positively wonder at the possibilities we haven’t even thought about. The unknown that shrouds these places enables many of mankind’s greatest dreams and aspirations, clouded by ideologies, and myths.






The works shown on the right were made for the show Out of Space a two person show with artist Christine Niehoff at Intermedia Gallery @ CCA in Glasgow.

Both works explore our abstracted knowledge of space. In the piece, stochastic series of eleven (in search of extra dimensions) a series of eleven drawings give homage to the superstring theory with it’s hard to fathom notion of eleven dimensions. The eleven colours used are the most frequently used colours associated with illustrations and digitalised colour manipulated photographs made by NASA to document and represent outer space. Each drawing re-imagines these eleven colours assisted by the circle.

The sculptural constellation eons ago when the universe was a lot smaller consist of a patchwork in a shape inspired by a NASA photo of two galaxies colliding, six triangle steel structures and a sterling silver object.

Both the triangle steel structures and the silver object are transformed disposable plastic objects. The triangle shapes were originally found in a take-away pizza to stop the lid form touching the pizza. The silver object is cast from a plastic strainer found in a glass of gherkins.

Both the steel structures and the silver object reappeared in the recent solo exhibitions Mind Circles and Human Silver Halo.

These two pieces were made for the show Filament with Panthalassa commissioned by London Print Studios Gallery. Both pieces plus two other works shown in the exhibition were inspired by the limitations of human knowledge in general and the deep sea in specific.

Pantahalassa is made from a deteriorated and fragmented digital drawn model of a disposable plastic contact lens holder.

The contact lens holder has reemerged as a hand crafted glass object in the recent 2013 piece We are the ashes of dying stars; we are nuclear waste.

This series of photograms explore the history of knowledge production within the natural sciences. Photograms are also known as camera less photography. It is an object left on a light sensitive paper and exposed to UV light. In this series, it is slices of stones that has been exposed.

A photogram from this series was shown as a large vinyl poster as part of Art on the Underground.
